Trifling behaviour
BACK in April we featured a profile on Doug Taylor whose dad, James, used to manage Morecambe's Central Pier from 1936-54.
As part of the feature we published this photograph from a children's event on the pier in 1945 in the hope it might bring back some memories. We were really pleased to hear from Ted Jones who remembered the party – for a rather humourous reason.
He writes: "It was a fancy dress party. I went with my brother, 'Make Do & Mend'; and my sister, 'A Nippy Waitress'. I think that I was 'A Stitch in Time'.
As we entered the dance hall a chap took me to one side where I joined a group of about eight children. I told him that I had to stay with my siblings.
In those days adults were very caring about the feelings of children. I could do as I was told or go home!
The mayor arrived and I was seated opposite him. All went well until we got to the dessert which was a sort of trifle on a hard biscuit base.
As I tried to break it up into mouth-sized bites it shot off my plate and ended up on his lap! Another caring adult, I know that he was trying to laugh but somehow he managed to convey the fact that he was not amused!
Mum felt that Geoffrey should have won the prize because she had carefully sewn patches all over his clothes whilst the winner just had a few needles and buttons on her jumper!
Mum had to buy tickets to this party but the Tunstall Street Party was free and we had much more food and cakes.
Pat and Geoffrey are seated fourth and fifth on the same row as the girl with pigtails.
