Road safety measures are to be introduced at a school following a campaign by parents and local councillors.
Lancashire County Council will be installing flashing warning lights and a warning sign at St. Peter’s School in Heysham village.
In 2011 Heysham grandparents Barbara and Alan Langridge were calling on Lancashire County Council to install a crossing patrol outside St. Peter’s Primary School in Heysham after concerns were raised that there could be a serious accident if one was not introduced.
Last year, David Morris brought the case up with the Prime Minister at Prime Ministers Questions.
Councillor Margaret Pattison said: “Parents were very worried, as the traffic races past the school, and we just need one child not to be concentrating and walk out and there will be a fatal accident.
“I’m so happy that we have been able to do something to save a child’s life.” MP David Morris MP said: “Ken Brown and Lancashire County Council Highways boss Tim Ashton asked me to meet them in Heysham.
“Following a productive conversation Ken Brown broke the news to me that St. Peter’s will have warning lights and a new sign.
“I am utterly delighted, this is wonderful news and I cannot thank Ken enough for his months of dedication, Tim for saying yes and of course to Barbara Langridge for initially bringing the issue to my attention.”
County Councillor Ken Brown said, “I have been involved in many meetings and I am happy that I can announce that the County Council will install a warning light and sign.”
County Councilor Tim Ashton Cabinet Member for Highways said: “I can sympathise with Mrs. Langridge and those who support her campaign for the safety of children at St. Peters.
“At Ken Brown’s request I have personally looked at the road outside the school and I have given the go ahead for the County Council to install flashing warning lights and a triangle warning sign.”
