Horrified by MP
I WAS disappointed, indeed horrified, to read in the Lancaster Guardian ('Full Steam Ahead for Smiling MP', July 30) that our new MP David Morris is "100% behind" the Northern Link Road.
I don't know the gentleman, as he is not from this area, but he just seems to be following the same old outdated, polluting dead-end route that our dinosaur, narrow-minded county council have been following.
Outdated, because no-one still believes that we can build our way out of congestion. Polluting – and how – bringing 23,500 extra tonnes of CO2 a year. Narrow-minded, because there are solutions that are available that would really solve local congestion.
Our previous MP, who is local to the area, realised that this expensive and destructive route – 140 million for three miles of HGV route – would not solve local congestion.
I would like to suggest to Mr Morris that he takes a good look at the proposed route, then maybe he would realise exactly how much damage this under performing road would cause, which would by far outweigh any benefits.
This route belongs to the last century, and is not in line with the government's obligation to reduce CO2. At this time of austerity, the road would be a scandalous waste of taxpayers' money, especially when education, health and other vital public services are being cut so dramatically.
