OLYMPIC swimmer Robert Bale took a trip back to his old primary school recently to help the children learn about the forthcoming London games.

Robert – who has been named among the 38 swimmers selected to represent Team GB this summer – visited Moorside Primary School in Lancaster, along with his old teacher Michelle Dent.

Mrs Dent taught Robert, 22, when he was seven and eight years old.

She has been teaching her class, 3D, about the Olympics, and Robert in particular, and was pleased he was able to join in their learning.

The class has made a wall collage with photos and information about Robert and the Olympics.

“Over the last few months my class have been in contact with him via email and also Robert set up a blog page with his brother James so we could follow his progress,” Mrs Dent said.

“It has been fantastic for the class to have been able to see what being a real life Olympian involves.

“He has told my class about his rigorous training programme, what he eats and how he is feeling right now.”

Robert travelled to the Olympic village with his family last week for a briefing.

The swimming team then flew to Edinburgh to focus and train away from the media ready for the start of their races.

Robert’s race – the 4x200m freestyle relay – is on July 31.

Mrs Dent added: “Even when I taught him he was a great swimmer and swam in the Moorside swimming team while he was at our school.

“He continued swimming whilst at Ripley and trained every day in Bolton before school.

“I am so proud of him as I have followed his career in swimming since he was very young.

“He has made many sacrifices, and so have his family, to enable him to be where he is today.”
