Student outrage over fracking talks

Lancaster University students were due to hold a protest on campus today, Thursday, against the university looking at plans to form a business partnership with fracking company Cuadrilla.

Cuadrilla is a company that is advancing hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, across the country – the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside.

Many students have taken to social networking sites to air their concerns at the idea of the university being tied with the company.

They have invited interested people to join them at Alexandra Square on the university’s campus to show Cuadrilla how they feel.

They will be setting up stalls from noon, followed by music and placard making from 2pm.

A message on Facebook said: “Many of us students are outraged by the idea of the university being tied with this immensely environmentally unfriendly and destructive company and we invite everyone to come down to Alexandra Square, make some noise and show Cuadrilla how unwelcome they are!”

A university spokesman confirmed they were due to hold talks with Cuadrilla but was unable to confirm the day or venue of the meeting.
