Pupils scoop awards for their business skills

Three Business and Management students at Lancaster Royal Grammar School were among the top 10 highest scorers in a prestigious national competition for schools run by chartered accountants Ernst and Young recently.

One of them, Upper Sixth student Joe Sansom, was named overall winner of the Pathfinder competition, scoring the highest points nationally in the online game, which aims to give pupils an insight into the business world.

Joe was recently presented with more than £500 worth of Apple electronics, including an iPad, by Lancaster University accounting student Eno Mwamba. Yasir Mir and Ashir Mir won Amazon vouchers of £50 and £25 respectively.

Head of Business and Management at LRGS, Russell Wareing, said: “I am delighted that Joe won this national Ernst and Young business competition.

“The linear Cambridge Pre-U Business and Management course that we run at LRGS gives the gepartment the time to enter a range of competitions and the course provides the students with a sound knowledge of real world business themes.”

This success follows soon after an LRGS team of three Business and Management students were runners up in the Young Entrepreneurs of the Year contest, a Dragons’ Den-style competition run by the Lancashire Evening Post.

The business initiative presented by Andre Dallas, Sam McIlwaine and Yasir Mir, was the Youth Vibes Movement, a youth culture initiative.

The students were judged on their creative thinking, communication skills and team work.

The top prize was to be £500 for the winning school, but judges were so impressed by the top two teams that they decided to split the award, with first prize winners the Moor Park Business & Enterprise School in Preston receiving £300 and the runners up LRGS receiving £200.
