Holocaust talk touches pupils

Guest speaker Freddy Naftel visited Casterton School, near Kirkby Lonsdale, to give a talk to Year 10 and Lower Sixth pupils about the Holocaust.

Mr Naftel shared his personal story of how his mother, grandmother and grandfather escaped Nazi Germany in 1934 to resettle in Manchester.

His great-grandmother survived after spending five years in a concentration camp, but several other relatives perished.

Mr Naftel’s thought-provoking account looked at how history ripples into the present and what lessons can be learned from the Holocaust.

He touched upon modern-day attitudes and prejudices towards faith and race and focused on dispelling misconceptions and Jewish stereotypes.

The girls were absorbed and moved by his story and found his talk extremely enlightening, most never having heard the events from a Jewish perspective. Afterwards they asked a series of well thought-out questions which fuelled many talking points.

The girls at Casterton study the Holocaust as part of both their GCSE and AS-level history courses.

Mr Naftel’s visit enhanced their understanding of this part of history and helped bring to life much of what they have learnt in the classroom.
