Bid to stop parking on ‘danger’ road

Cars parked on Bailrigg Lane near lancaster University which are causing problems.

A CYCLIST or pedestrian could be killed because of inconsiderate parking by university students and staff on a rural road.

That is the fear of campaigners calling for parking restrictions on Bailrigg Lane close to Lancaster University.

A cycle path between the campus and Hala runs along the lane for a short distance, and it is feared that parked cars pose a hazard to users of the path by narrowing the lane.

Scotforth Parish Council has surveyed all 28 residents on Bailrigg Lane, asking whether they would like to see single yellow lines or signs along the road.

So far, most who have returned the survey have expressed a preference for signs, but both measures would result in a ban on parking between 8am and 6pm on weekdays.

Alan Dick, who lives on Bailrigg Lane, said: “The lane is becoming really dangerous. There can be more than 20 cars parked here.

“That means cars have to get past on the right-hand side of the road. If a cyclist is coming downhill the other way, there is no room if neither slows or stops.

“There is nowhere for the cyclists to go, and you would think some of them were competing in the Tour de France.

“There have been lots of near misses, and I’ve twice had cyclists ending up on my car bonnet. Somebody could be killed.

“We local residents will drive at 20mph, but others, like delivery people, seem to drive as fast as they can.”

Supposed to be a newspaper? Problems like this are so widespread that they are no longer news.

I regularly run along Bailrigg Lane and yes its the cyclists that cause most danger to pedestrians (some but not all). A good number of them feel that they don't need to use lights and are often pedalling 'hell for leather'. It's also true that if the cars were not parked on the grass verges then this would be less of a problem to pedestrians. As ami3214 states these organisations want people to come and studywork at their institutions but are not willing to provide adequate on site parking for staff or students alike and seem hell bent on charging people for the privilige of having to park on site. Not everyone lives near a public transport hub and it too is becoming ever dearer to ride the trains and buses!

yes cars are stupidly parked, and some don't move for days at a time, the university should be doing more and yellow lines would be a good solution. yes delivery vans drive like they're being chased by a band of zombies, but then most drive like that everywhere, but being a pedestrian on that road for most of last year, it's the cyclists not the cars that you are most at risk from, you can hear a car coming up behind you, you can't always hear a bike and the speed they go is ridiculous, they should be made to get off and walk or at least give way to the pedestrians like all other considerate road users do.

the problem is these big organisations not providing adequate parking for their staff and visitors. We live in a semi rural area with poor public transport, big hills and rubbish weather so cycling is only for a minority of dedicated enthusiast. So RLI, UCUM and Lancaster Uni sort yer act out

So... the problem seems to be the cyclists not being aware of the potential dangers of speeding down the lane. Not the staff or students parking.
