Community school is purely academic

PLANS for a new academy to open on the site of Ingleton Middle School are under way with parents now being invited to sign up their children for the school.

The 3 Peaks Community Academy at Ingleton will open in September after the middle school closes this summer, if the Secretary of State gives the go ahead.

Parents living in Settle, Giggleswick, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Austwick, Clapham, Burton and Thornton-in-Lonsdale, Bentham, Wray, Tatham Fells, Ingleton and Kirkby Lonsdale can now register their children for a place at the school.

The academy would run as a self-governed free school with a capacity of 250 pupils, roughly twice as many as currently attend the middle school.

It would start with just one year and take up to five years to reach its projected capacity, and first choice would go to children in Bentham, Burton, Clapham and Ingleton.

Classes would have no more than 25 pupils.

Tony Macaulay, one of the local people behind the plans, said: “When the judicial review to keep the middle school open failed, we decided to look at opening the school up as a free school.
