A small Heysham-based charity has benefited from a local beer festival.
A cheque for £1,000 has been handed over to A Breath for Life as a result of money raised by Lancaster Round Table.
The cash, part of the proceeds from the Table’s annual beer festival, will go towards helping run a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. It is the sort of chamber more readily associated with deep sea divers.
A Breath for Life is only a small local charity based in Middleton but it has a growing reputation at home and abroad. It provides an important service not normally found within the National Health, effectively offering people the chance to use oxygen as an aid to recovery from illness.
A Breath for Life was born in 1998 with the original aim of providing natural treatments for children, but it is now open to adults suffering from a wide variety of conditions, some neurological and others physical.
Essentially those seeking treatment spend time in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber which is 9ft in diameter with a large opening door and a domed roof.
That treatment is built around the premise that oxygen is a primary healer and essential for the body’s function, growth and repair. Hyperbaric oxygen promotes the formation of new blood vessels and can revitalise damaged brain cells.
Ben Robinson, the Table’s community support officer, said: “Lancaster Round Table raises much needed funds for all sorts of deserving causes and I can think of none more deserving than A Breath for Life.
“The work they do is amazing”.
John Gooch, a trustee who looks after the centre’s administration and finances, said: “We survive on good will and through the efforts of people like the Round Table who raise and donate cash. “
Because A Breath for Life is such a small charity, running costs have been kept to a minimum and Mr Gooch reckons that they need to raise around £30,000 to cover most of the annual costs.
“We are now looking for more sponsorship and in the coming months we will be redoubling our efforts to seek more local benefactors and I am sure if they were to see the work we do more people would come forward just like the Round Table,” he said.
