MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood, Eric Ollerenshaw met supporters of Fair Trade, including Tony Harney and Margaret Rand from Lancaster, who were taking part in a walk from Garstang to Keswick linking up Fair Trade towns along the route. They set off from the slave trade memorial in Lancaster to highlight unfair trade.

Fair Trade campaigners made a poignant stop-off at the slave trade memorial on Lancaster’s St George’s Quay during an 88-mile awareness raising walk.

The walkers, who hailed from places including Lancaster, Morecambe, Arnside and all over Lancashire and Cumbria, were walking the Fair Trade Way, starting at Garstang, the world’s first Fair Trade town and ending at Keswick, one of its most recent.

The walk also raised money for the chairty Oxfam, which is celebrating its 70th birthday.

Anthony Harney, from Atherton Road, who is deputy shop manager at Oxfam in the city centre, said: “I am inspired by what Mahatma Gandhi did – he walked for justice.

“In far too many in countries hungry communities want to grow and sell their own food to feed their own families, but the lack of investment in small scale agriculture is preventing them from getting themselves out of poverty.

“The fair trade movement has been great at empowering small scale farmers around the world.”

Eric Ollerenshaw, MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood, who gave the walkers a send off, said: “The Fair Trade Way is a great initiative to celebrate the Fair Trade movement and to remind us all what passionate and determined citizens who want to bring positive change can achieve when they work together.”
