A HEYSHAM man has been jailed for five years for the systematic sexual abuse of a boy more than two decades ago.
Peter Bodel Stanley Barber, 61, of Middleton Road, was found guilty of 17 charges of sexual abuse against a boy in Kendal during the 1970s and 1980s when he was aged between nine and 14.

Barber, who was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court, will also remain on the sex offenders' register for life.

Det Cons Rita Lees, of the public protection unit in Kendal, said: "This sentence reflects the horrific nature of the abuse that a young boy had to deal with so many years ago.

"The result heard at court would not have been possible without the courage of the victim and the support of his family.

"This case demonstrates that it doesn't matter how long ago abuse occurred, or how elderly the alleged offender is, police will take all allegations seriously."
