PLANS to reduce Williamson Park's carbon footprint could include a giant wind turbine to rival the Ashton Memorial.
The scheme is one of several put forward as possible energy saving methods for the Lancaster park.

Park general manager Elaine Charlton said no plans are being discussed at this stage, but several options - including a wind turbine and solar power - had been suggested.

"Williamson Park has been looking at all kinds of sustainable energy projects for the future," she said. "Any ideas that have been mooted are merely suggestions at this point in time, and nothing would be put in the park without it being subject to consultation by the community and other bodies.

"You can't rule anything out, but while we want to cut our energy bills we wouldn't do it to the detriment of the park views."

Green councillor Jon Barry said: "I would like to see a giant windmill in Williamson Park co-exist with the Ashton Memorial as a visual landmark.

"This would send out a message that Lancaster celebrates its tradition but is also trying to take care of its future."

I'm all for reducing our carbon footprint but what on earth are thinking? A turbine to rival the Ashton Memorial! I'll look ridiculously out of place!

I do hope that they go for a more discreet option of energy saving!
