FIREFIGHTERS rescued a parrot from a Morecambe flat after a chip pan fire on Wednesday evening.
A woman escaped the first floor property in Marine Road Central with her dog when the fire broke out just after 6pm.
Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued the parrot from the smokelogged flat and extinguished the blaze.
The par
rot was resuscitated sucessfully using oxygen.
Two fire crews took around 20 minutes to extinguish the kitchen fire. Residents from two other flats were evacuated from the building.
The woman received serious burns to her hand. She was treated at the scene by firefighters and paramedics then taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmiary by ambulance.
The fire is believed to have started when a chip pan was left unattended.
The kitchen was destroyed in the fire, and six further rooms were damaged by heat and smoke. The property was fitted with a fire alarm, but it did not operate correctly.
Watch manager Tim Murrell said: "The fire service advises that people dispose of their chip pans and purchase a deep fat frier instead. "The thermostat built in to a deep fat frier prevents incidents such as this. Around half of all chip pan fires result in injuries to the occupants and some prove fatal."
