Crossing plan for death crash site

PLANS are in place for a road crossing near to the spot where a popular businessman was killed on Lancaster's one-way system last week.
The plans are at a very early stage, but if agreed will take the form of a toucan crossing, which includes traffic lights and usually iron railings to protect pedestrians from the traffic.
A city council spokesman said: "There are plans for a toucan crossing in the programme of works submitted to the Cycling Demonstration Town for approval. We are awaiting formal confirmation that these plans have been accepted.
"The proposed crossing is on the southern side of Spring Garden Street. This is all part of a three- year programme of works still subject to approval."
A Lancaster businessman this week paid tribute to Sadhu Singh, 75, who died following a collision with a car on King Street last Monday.
Duncan Woodcock, managing director of Reid Hamilton, chatted with Mr Singh in his premises in Queen Square minutes before he was seriously injured trying to cross King Street.
Mr Singh, of Albany Road, Morecambe, was taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary but died from his injuries.
Mr Woodcock said: "Mr Singh had been a customer of ours for 20 years.
"The staff thought he was brilliant and he was just a very lovely, courteous man."
He added that a road crossing was vital.
"One of my staff has been knocked down by a cyclist on the road, leaving her very badly bruised and off work for three days.
"Another former member of staff has had a hip broken after being hit by a car," he said.
* Police are still compiling a report into Mr Singh's death. No one has been charged in connection with the incident.
